Letter from Dr. Rutlegde

Dear Patient,

As many of you may know, I am entering my 38th year in our Pleasure House Road dental practice. It’s been a true passion for me to be able to provide dental care to so many of you over many years. I chose the career of dentistry at the young age of 13; every part of my journey has supported that wonderful choice in all aspects of my life. I was born to do what I do, loving this profession as much as ever.

You can probably guess that I’m reaching a time in my life when I need to slow down my schedule and eventually retire from dentistry. This has been a very difficult decision, but due to several life circumstances I feel that I must begin this process. Several decades of practicing dentistry has caused some intermittent muscular back problems: nothing too serious at this point, but I don’t want to overdo it. In addition, as many of you know, my youngest son Carson, a pediatric dentist, was diagnosed with brain cancer about 14 months ago. This has been a long stressful challenge for me and my family. I have felt the need to cut back my practice time to help with the numerous health challenges that Carson is faced with. I’m so grateful for all of you that have kept us embraced in your thoughts and prayers.

The timing has been perfect as I have found a talented dentist that has been looking to find a practice like ours. Dr Kelly Paxton, having had 18 years of experience in a group practice, has been seeking her own practice. Based on her values and perspectives on dentistry, she was immediately attracted to the way we practice dentistry. She comes with rave reviews from her previous patients and team. She has had some of the best training and experience possible and is deeply committed to maintaining the philosophy, thoroughness, values, and relationships that have been central to our practice. Kelly is warm and personable; I know that you will continue to feel at home in her care. Please look for her and say hello when you are in the office.

I plan to continue to practice on a part-time basis for a while, allowing me to be accessible as I work alongside Kelly. The always gracious Susan Sutton at our front desk will continue to be the friendly voice and face greeting and scheduling you. The entire rest of the team (Tabetha, Amy, and Carmen) is also excited to stay on board to maintain the continuity. I am deeply committed to assisting the practice continue to serve you in the ways you have always appreciated.

The relationships I’ve developed with each of you have been rewarding beyond all my expectations. I have long had a deep passion for the artistry, biology, and engineering required in providing dental care. Over and above these are the biggest rewards of getting to know and appreciate all of you in my life. The relationships I’ve shared with each of you have been fulfilling beyond my highest dreams. Your trust in me has been truly humbling.

I feel blessed to be able to have Kelly Paxton continue providing you with the care I so believe in. Join me in welcoming her to the practice.  Hope to still see you in our office soon!

Your friend,
Jim Rutledge DDS

Is Undiagnosed TMD Causing You Neck And Shoulder Pain?

September 9, 2020

Do you have frequent headaches or migraines, earaches or tinnitus, tender jaw muscles, or a dull aching facial pain? Do you often have neck and shoulder pain? Does your jaw lock or stray to one side when you open your mouth? These aches and pains may be related to the jaw joint, called the temporomandibular joint or “TMJ,” and the muscles that work to move the joint. These painful conditions are often called “TMD” for temporomandibular disorders.
